April 11 has been declared a public holiday to mark the birth anniversary of famous social reformer Mahatma Jyotiba Phule. Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has approved the proposal of public holiday, till now only optional holiday was being given on Phule Jayanti. In the official orders issued by the Gehlot government, it has been said that several social organizations and people’s representatives, including Women and Child Development Minister Mamta Bhupesh, National Phule Brigade, had written letters demanding to declare a public holiday.
Significantly, Jyotiba Phule, a famous social reformer, had played an important role in ending untouchability from the country and strengthening the society. He worked to free the society from evils, to connect girls and Dalits with education. He also made organized efforts for the rights of farmers and laborers. Earlier, the Gehlot government had also declared Lord Devnarayan Jayanti holiday on January 28 as a public holiday. With this, now the number of public holidays in the state has increased to 30 and the number of optional holidays to 20.
On the birth anniversary of Mahatma Jyotiba Phule, various programs will be organized in many states including Rajasthan, wreaths will also be offered in front of Phule’s statue at many places, while Phule’s contribution will also be remembered.
