According to Sunil Gavaskar, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have a strong chance of securing a spot in the top four of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 due to their well-balanced team of experienced and young players.
Despite the tournament being several months away, experts are already predicting the playoff scenarios. Gavaskar, a former India captain and renowned batsman, believes that the defending champions will have no trouble qualifying for the knockouts once again.
CSK, one of the most successful teams in IPL history, has qualified for the playoffs 12 times and finished second on the table last season. They went on to win their record-equalling fifth title after defeating the Gujarat Titans in the first qualifier and final.
During an interview on Star Sports, Gavaskar highlighted the team’s purchases at last year’s players’ auction in Dubai. The five-time champions acquired overseas players such as Darryl Mitchell, Mustafizur Rahman, and Rachin Ravindra, as well as Indian players Shardul Thakur, Sameer Rizvi, and Avanish Rao Aravelly.
Gavaskar believes that CSK’s mix of experienced and young players will help them secure a top-four finish in the upcoming edition. He also mentioned that while they cannot be considered as definite favorites, their consistent performance in the tournament for the past 16 years makes it highly likely for them to qualify for the 13th time.
Despite concerns about the fitness of some key players, Gavaskar remains confident in CSK’s prospects, citing their strong squad depth and versatility. He also mentioned that the reacquisition of Shardul Thakur has alleviated concerns about the availability of Deepak Chahar for the entire tournament.
