India TV Poll Results: The Congress has been presented with an offer of 17 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh by the Samajwadi Party (SP), which stated that its leader Akhilesh Yadav would join the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra led by Rahul Gandhi in Raebareli only if the offer is agreed upon.
“We have extended a final offer of 17 Lok Sabha seats to the Congress. Akhilesh Yadav’s involvement in the Nyay Yatra in Raebareli on Tuesday hinges on their acceptance,” Rajendra Chaudhary, the chief spokesperson of the Samajwadi Party, informed the media.
He, however, declined to disclose the specific seats offered to the Congress. The Gandhi-led yatra is scheduled to pass through Amethi on Monday before proceeding to Raebareli, where the Samajwadi Party leader had previously expressed his intention to join.
In a statement released on Sunday, the Congress announced that party chief Mallikarjun Kharge would join the yatra, currently in Pratapgarh, in Amethi. The Samajwadi Party had initially offered 11 seats to the Congress, but the state unit of the Congress requested a higher allocation.
Ajay Rai, the chief of the Congress’ Uttar Pradesh unit, had earlier stated that the party should receive approximately two dozen seats, the number it had won in the 2009 general elections. The Samajwadi Party and the Congress are allies in the opposition I.N.D.I.A bloc.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh, the Congress only managed to secure a victory in the Raebareli constituency. With 80 seats, Uttar Pradesh sends the largest number of MPs to Parliament.
