In Raipur, Chhattisgarh’s primary opposition party Congress caused chaos in the Assembly on Friday by demanding the resignation of Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma following the killing of three members of a Baiga tribe family in Kabirdham district. The House proceedings were adjourned twice and Congress MLAs were suspended due to the uproar. The Speaker denied the opposition’s request for a discussion on the matter. During Zero Hour, senior Congress MLA Bhupesh Baghel brought up the murder of a family in Kabirdham district and requested a discussion, leading to further uproar and the proceedings being adjourned briefly by Speaker Raman Singh.
During the session, the Minister provided details of the incident. He mentioned that Budhram Baiga, his wife Hirmati, and their son Jonhu Ram died in a hut fire on January 15 in Kabirdham district. Investigations revealed that a dispute over land led to the tragic incident. Thirteen suspects, including two women, were arrested based on witness accounts and forensic evidence. Despite dissatisfaction from Congress MLAs, further discussion on the matter was denied by the Speaker.
The demand for the Home Minister’s resignation and other actions by Congress MLAs. After the suspects were apprehended over a month later, Congress MLAs demanded justice for the Baiga family, the suspension of the District Collector, and the resignation of the Home Minister. Some members even approached the chair, leading to a temporary suspension of the proceedings and the suspension of Congress members. The opposition showed support for their demands through posters, which the Speaker objected to. Subsequently, Congress members boycotted the proceedings and staged a protest outside the House at Mahatma Gandhi’s statue.
