Jagran Team, New Delhi. The upcoming elections for 15 Rajya Sabha seats are scheduled for Tuesday, with 10 seats from Uttar Pradesh, four from Karnataka, and one from Himachal Pradesh. Previously, members for 41 seats were elected unopposed. In Uttar Pradesh, there are a total of 11 candidates vying for 10 seats, with eight from BJP and three from SP. The addition of Sanjay Seth as the eighth candidate by BJP has added an interesting twist to the elections.
Cross voting is anticipated for the tenth seat, with both parties making efforts to secure the necessary votes. Notable candidates include former Union Minister of State for Home RPN Singh, who switched from Congress to BJP for the Rajya Sabha elections, Dr. Sudhanshu Trivedi, Chaudhary Tejveer Singh, Dr. Sangeeta Balwant, Sadhna Singh, Amarpal Maurya, and Naveen Jain.
Sanjay Seth is the eighth candidate representing BJP.
On the final day of nominations, BJP introduced former Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Seth as their eighth candidate, adding an element of intrigue to the elections. Both BJP and SP will need additional votes to secure victory for their respective candidates. SP’s candidates include Jaya Bachchan, Ramji Lal Suman, and Alok Ranjan.
BJP requires 296 votes to win
The UP Legislative Assembly consists of 399 members out of 403, with four seats currently vacant. Each seat requires the votes of 37 MLAs for victory. BJP and its allies have a total of 286 members, but they need 296 votes to ensure victory for all eight candidates. Even if two MLAs from Jansatta Dal Loktantrik support BJP, they will still require eight more votes.
SP needs 111 votes, currently has 108
SP currently has 108 votes but requires 111 votes for the victory of their three candidates. Even if two Congress members support SP, they will still need one additional vote. Three SP MLAs are in jail, which may impact the voting outcome.
Irfan Solanki unable to vote
SP MLA Irfan Solanki, currently in Maharajganj jail, will not be able to cast his vote in the Rajya Sabha elections. His request for permission to vote was rejected by the MP-MLA’s court due to time constraints.

BJP’s strategy in Himachal Pradesh
Congress holds 40 seats in the 68-member Himachal Assembly, with claims of support from three independent MLAs. BJP, with 25 MLAs, is confident of victory with the backing of Congress dissidents. Both Congress and BJP candidates are actively seeking support from MLAs before the elections.
MLAs’ dilemma in Himachal Pradesh
For BJP’s Harsh Mahajan to win, the support of seven Congress MLAs and three independent MLAs is crucial. Alternatively, if 13 Congress MLAs abstain from voting, it could lead to victory for BJP. Congress emphasizes that their MLAs cannot go against the government due to the remaining tenure of the state government.
