Hundreds of enraged and mourning individuals, including women, men, and even children, wearing black ribbons on their turbans and arms, took to the streets in Punjab on Friday to observe ‘Aakrosh Diwas’ in protest of the tragic death of young farmer Shubhkarman Singh on February 21 at the Khanauri borders during the ongoing Delhi Chalo agitation. Moreover, residents displayed black flags on their houses and vehicles as a symbol of their dissent.
The protest was organized by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), a group separate from the Dilli Chalo movement, while SKM (Non-political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM), both affiliated with the agitation, observed a ‘Black Day.’
The demonstrators expressed their grievances against the government’s actions, with one protester stating, “Revolution runs in our veins. It is our right to demand our legitimate rights. If the government uses force to suppress us, we must speak out.” Another protester emphasized the resilience of the community, saying, “They need to understand our DNA…our history…how determined we are. If we resist, we will persist.”
Various individuals, including writer and social activist Sushil Dosanjh, participated in the protest by displaying black flags and burning effigies. The SKM also praised the Punjab government’s decision to provide compensation and a job to the family of Shubhkaran Singh, who tragically lost his life during the clash with security personnel at the Punjab-Haryana Khanauri border.
Despite this, the SKM reiterated its demand for an FIR to be registered against those responsible for the farmers’ deaths and called for a judicial inquiry into the incidents. Members of the Central trade unions also joined the protest, underscoring their unity in advocating for justice and accountability.
