High Court stay on recruitment of 5994 ETT Teachers in Punjab

Reading Time: 1 min read

The recruitment of 5994 ETT teachers in Punjab has been temporarily halted by the Punjab-Haryana High Court. The Punjab government initially agreed to suspend the recruitment pending a petition, but later withdrew the agreement, prompting the High Court to intervene and stop the recruitment process.

According to the petition filed by Parvinder Singh and others through Advocate Vikas Chatrath, the Punjab Government had advertised 5994 ETT teacher posts on October 12, 2022. However, changes in the recruitment rules on October 28, 2022, made it mandatory for all Group C government job applicants to pass an additional Punjabi examination. This change was applied retrospectively to the previously advertised ETT teacher positions, causing confusion and dissatisfaction among eligible candidates.

A corrigendum was issued on December 1, 2022, further enforcing the new rule on the ETT teacher recruitment process. The petitioners argue that this amendment should not apply to previously advertised positions, and they are seeking a cancellation of the corrigendum and a halt to the recruitment process.

The High Court highlighted the issue of changing recruitment criteria post-advertisement as the main concern in this case. This change has led to eligible candidates becoming ineligible and has created confusion in the final stages of the recruitment process. As a result, the High Court has intervened to address these issues before the selected candidates are appointed.
