On Monday, Jharkhand Chief Minister Champai Soren successfully passed a floor test in the state Assembly with the support of 47 MLAs. This victory ensures that the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha-led ‘Mahagathbandhan’ will continue to govern the state.
Out of the 77 MLAs present during the trust vote, the opposition NDA, which consists of the BJP and AJSU party, received 29 votes in the 81-member House. Independent MLA Saryu Roy did not participate in the voting process.
The trust vote was scheduled for February 5, giving Champai Soren 10 days to prove his government’s majority. Former CM Hemant Soren, who was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on January 31 in connection with a money laundering case, was also able to participate in the vote after being granted permission by a special PMLA court.
During the trust vote, Hemant Soren challenged the BJP to prove the corruption charges against him and stated that he would resign from politics if they were proven true. He also alleged that the Raj Bhavan played a role in his arrest.
The ruling JMM-led coalition, which consists of the JMM, Congress, and RJD, has 47 MLAs in the 81-member House and is supported by one independent MLA. To prevent any attempts of “poaching,” around 40 MLAs were sent to a private resort in Hyderabad but returned to Ranchi on Sunday to participate in the trust vote.
A floor test, also known as a trust vote, is conducted to determine if a new government has the support of the majority in the legislature. If the government fails the trust vote, they are required to step down.
