In response to the Central Government’s planned ‘White Paper’ on the previous UPA Government’s 10 years in power, the Congress has released its own ‘Black Paper’ titled “A Decade of Modi Government”. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge presented the ‘Black Paper’ and criticized the current government for its failure to address issues such as unemployment and discrimination against non-BJP states like Kerala, Karnataka, and Telangana.
The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced that the upcoming ‘White Paper’ will focus on the country’s poor economic state when the Congress-led UPA was in power and how the current government has brought about a turnaround. According to BJP leader and chairman of the Standing Committee on Finance, Jayant Sinha, India was among the ‘fragile five’ economies in 2013 under the UPA regime, with low GDP growth, high inflation, and rising NPAs. He claims that the BJP managed to turn things around when they came to power in 2014.
The ‘White Paper’ will be presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to highlight the economic crisis faced by the country during the UPA’s tenure and how the current government has overcome it. Sitharaman has stated that the economy is now on a sustainable growth path with all-round development. She also mentioned that the purpose of the ‘White Paper’ is to learn from the mismanagement of the previous years. The government plans to table the ‘White Paper’ during the extended Budget session of Parliament, which will continue until Saturday, with the finance minister presenting it on the last day.
While Parliament does not usually function on weekends, the ruling BJP has previously called for special sessions on Saturdays. The ‘White Paper’ will also serve as a tool for the BJP to criticize the Congress in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, expected to take place in April-May.
