During the recent state elections, the Madhya Pradesh Chief Electoral Officer’s office announced on Thursday (February 22) that it had implemented a WhatsApp chatbot, engaging with more than 1.2 million citizens.
Created by Gupshup, the chatbot reportedly provided assistance for various election-related inquiries, such as verifying the voter list and locating polling stations. The company highlighted that a significant accomplishment was aiding in voter registration processes, guiding over two lakh individuals who needed corrections or new registrations to the appropriate platforms.
Using the WhatsApp Business API, the election office ensured real-time communication with 65,000 polling officers on election day, which helped in timely information dissemination and data collection.
Anupam Rajan, Chief Electoral Officer of Madhya Pradesh, stated, “By offering immediate, reliable information to citizens throughout the state, we have observed a notable increase in voter participation and trust in the electoral system.” The state currently has 55 million eligible voters. Vikas Goel, Senior Director of the Government Vertical at Gupshup, shared similar sentiments, expressing satisfaction with the collaboration with the Madhya Pradesh State Election Office. He remarked, “The success of the WhatsApp chatbot demonstrates the effectiveness of conversational AI in fostering meaningful engagement between citizens and government institutions.”
Looking ahead, the state election office plans to make the chatbot a permanent channel for citizen interaction with the Election Commission, with the goal of improving transparency and efficiency in future electoral processes.
