An inquiry was launched by the Gujarat Lokayukta into multiple complaints about the leakage of question papers for recruitment exams conducted by the Gujarat Subordinate Services Selection Board. In a report presented to the state legislature, the Lokayukta recommended that all exam papers be printed in a government press to prevent any chances of leaks. The Lokayukta also suggested modifications to the current procedure to ensure transparency and accountability. Additionally, the report proposed a closer examination of the process for setting exam papers by the Gujarat Public Service Commission or the Union Public Service Commission. It also highlighted a separate “suo moto inquiry” conducted by the Lokayukta into poor road quality in Ahmedabad and other areas of the state. The report recommended extending the default liability period for cases of poor workmanship from two years to five years. It also urged the Urban Development and Roads and Buildings departments of the Gujarat government to seek suggestions from engineers and consultants to improve the system. The Lokayukta further proposed the inclusion of certain clauses to hold both municipal corporation/government officers and contractors accountable. These recommendations were part of the Lokayukta’s 23rd annual consolidated report, which covered the period from April 2022 to March 2023.
