Who is Sanjay Seth? There has been a sudden buzz in Uttar Pradesh’s politics regarding the 2024 Rajya Sabha elections. Based on the numbers, the BJP had nominated seven candidates on Wednesday. Now it has been revealed that Sanjay Seth can be nominated as the eighth candidate. To win the eighth candidate, the BJP will need at least 14 additional votes. In this regard, the news of Sanjay Seth’s candidacy has posed challenges for the Samajwadi Party in three seats. There is a lot of discussion about Sanjay Seth. It is believed that the BJP has strategically fielded Sanjay Seth. Sanjay Seth was a Rajya Sabha MP from the Samajwadi Party before joining the BJP in 2019. He was the National Treasurer of the Samajwadi Party.
On August 10, 2019, Sanjay Seth left the Samajwadi Party and joined the BJP, after which he was sent to the Rajya Sabha by the BJP. Currently, he is a Rajya Sabha MP from the BJP. Due to his past association with the Samajwadi Party, Sanjay Seth is considered to have deep roots in the party. Political experts believe that the decision to field Sanjay Seth as the eighth candidate must have been carefully thought out by the BJP. In the Rajya Sabha elections, the Samajwadi Party has fielded three candidates, including Alok Ranjan, the former Chief Secretary of Uttar Pradesh, Jaya Bachchan, a four-time Rajya Sabha member, and former MP and Dalit leader Ramji Lal Suman. The Samajwadi Party has no problem in winning two candidates in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly based on the numbers, but it needs an additional vote for the third candidate. If the BJP did not field an eighth candidate, the path for the Samajwadi Party would have been easier, but by fielding the eighth candidate, the BJP has created a need for 14 additional votes. The BJP has 252 MLAs. After adding the MLAs of smaller parties, there are a total of 271 MLAs. Even after adding nine MLAs from Ralod and two MLAs from Raja Bhaiya’s party, the BJP will still need 14 additional votes to win eight candidates.
Sanjay Seth’s candidacy, who holds a prominent position in Uttar Pradesh’s politics and the business community, has posed a new challenge for the Samajwadi Party. It is said that Sanjay Seth also has a significant influence within the Samajwadi Party. Therefore, he will be a strong contender. After fielding three candidates in the Rajya Sabha elections with the support of 108 SP MLAs and 2 Congress members, the Samajwadi Party was already in need of one vote to secure the victory of the third candidate. Now, in addition to fulfilling the requirement of an extra vote, the party also faces the challenge of retaining its votes amidst internal conflicts.
